Cotton Candy

Karlie Justus - blogged for the 2008 / 2009 N.C. State Fairs. This is her bio from 2009: When I'm not blogging for the N.C. State Fair, I go by Karlie Justus--but Cotton Candy suits me just fine. My earliest memories of the Fair are of the times my parents would bring my brother and I up from Asheville, N.C. for a double dose of the Fair and a N.C. State football game. Fast-forward two decades later, and I'm a public information officer for the deep fried celebration whose must-see Fair attractions include the giant pumpkins, decorated cakes and deep fried Oreos.

Deep Fried Ambassador update: How ’bout them apples?

Our Deep Fried Ambassador is busy blogging about all things N.C. State Fair related. We’ll re-post all of her Fair entries, but be sure to check out her Pretty*Swell blog. How do I begin to describe Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples? Colossal. Decadent. Scrumptious. With names like “The Ultimate Apple Super Extreme” and “Cashew Turtle Super Monster,” these apples are incredible. My husband, a candy-apple connoisseur, says that Miss Debbie’s apples are the best he’s ever tasted. We shared a pecan pie apple this week (fresh Granny Smith coated in homemade caramel, dipped in a homemade pecan praline confection and rolled…

See Jamey Johnson ‘In Color’ Monday, Oct. 19

I’ll admit: I’m a bit of a fan girl for Jamey Johnson. I don’t know if it’s the outlaw country vibe, his honest lyrics or that intense beard. (Okay, I know it’s not the beard. The beard is a little scary.) What I do know is his brand of country music is a unique mix of honky-tonk, outlaw and a little bit of the blues. If you’re on a first-name basis with Waylon, Willie, Merle and George, you’ll want to check him out. I’ve seen him in concert twice — first at the 2008 Got to Be NC Ag Jam…

Yeah, there’s a deep-fried app for that.

A few weeks ago we came across the Twitter account @StateFairApp. Upon further investigation, we ended up talking with Triangle resident and app creator Rob Taylor about the State Fair Apps he’s created, including one specifically for the N.C. State Fair. (We’re even the featured Fair on his Web site screenshots.) Rob was nice enough to answer some questions for us. We haven’t tried it out yet, but we’ll be giving away promo codes from our @NCStateFair Twitter account and at the Deep-Fried Triangle Tweetup on Thursday, Oct. 22, so you can take it for a test-drive. (Haven’t registered for…

New L’Oréal Paris makeover tent is ‘pretty’ fabulous

Although there’s nothing deep-fried about the new L’Oréal Paris Color Space tent — well, unless you were to come into the makeover booths with a sunburn — we wanted to check out the exhibit’s promised “insider tips and tricks on the newest and best in beauty.” The 5,000-square-foot tent is really impressive, and reminds me of the weekly L’Oréal Paris challenges on Project Runway (our Twitter friend @Raleighwood reminded us to “use the Macy’s accessories wall thoughtfully.” She’s clearly a Tim Gunn fan as well.) The staff is really knowledgeable, and Elaine, who works in the Skincare Lab, is actually a…

Deep Fried Ambassador update: ‘Cause you’re hungry

Our Deep Fried Ambassador is busy blogging about all things N.C. State Fair related. We’ll re-post all of her Fair entries, but be sure to check out her Pretty*Swell blog. Y’all, I cheated on chocolate-covered bacon today. With this: And now I’m sick with guilt. Or, it could be the deep-fried Oreo rock that’s set up residence in my stomach. I think it just crawled into its sleeping bag and turned off the night-light because I can still feel it. Like a five-ton grease-soaked reminder of my little transgression. I still love you, bacon. I had a great time at…

Sampling Miss Debbie’s specialty apples

Miss Debbie from Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples was nice enough to let us sample some of her newest creations, the Pig Candy Apple, the Honkin’ Hog Apple and the Caramel Pecan Pie. You can taste these apples for yourself in the Commercial Building near Gate 11. Here’s the details on the apples we sample in the video below: Pig Candy Apple: Granny Smith Apple covered in caramel and dipped in white chocolate and covered in bacon and topped off with brown sugar and cinnamon. Honkin’ Hog Apple: Same as the Pig Candy Apple, but with dark cholocate instead of white….

Deep Fried Ambassador update: A teensy bit excited about the Fair. Can you tell?

Our Deep Fried Ambassador is busy blogging about all things N.C. State Fair related. We’ll re-post all of her Fair entries, but be sure to check out her Pretty*Swell blog. I’ve been reading and reading and reading about the fair, and I’m glad to report that my fair knowledge now extends beyond chocolate-covered bacon. A little bit. Seriously, this is the best year EVER to be the Deep-Fried Ambassador. As you may have detected by the subtle insinuation in my writing, I have a thing for bacon. I nearly passed out when I heard about the chocolate-covered bacon at this year’s…

Sampling Woody’s new buffalo chicken rangoons

We here in the Press Office take our duties very seriously. Between helping the media, organizing the opening ceremony and various press conferences, writing blog posts and news releases and more, we make sure to try out the newest food creations on the fairgrounds and share them with you. We’ve already tasted deep-fried Ho Hos and chocolate-covered bacon, and yesterday we stopped by Woody’s City Market food stand to try out the new buffalo chicken rangoons. These bite-sized, deep-fried dumplings (similar to the crab rangoons available in many Chinese restaurants) are filled with Woody’s famous buffalo chicken and medium sauce….

As we get closer and closer to the Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup, we wanted to give you a little more information on what you can expect at the event beyond lots of tweeting, lots of friends and lots of N.C. (Who is joining me in getting a Fail Whale painted on their face?) If you haven’t joined in on the fun yet, be sure to register for the event here, and come out to…
