Jeff Miles interned for the N.C. State Fair in 2011. This is his bio from that year: People usually call me Jeff Miles but when asked what my favorite part of Fair was, rides was the first thing that came to mind--so call me Tilt-A-Whirl from here on out. I've always been a big fan of the State Fair and I'm really excited to be working here this summer. I'll be bringing you weekly updates on the goings on at the fairgrounds and hopefully much more. Entertainment all around: Roaming acts at this year’s fair

Part of the excitement of the State Fair is experiencing the unexpected, and this year’s roaming acts promise to add to that excitement. Weekend Update: September 16-18

September has been a busy month a the fairgrounds and this weekend is no exception. The weekend kicks off today with the 53rd annual N.C. State Championship Horse Show in the Hunt Horse Complex. The event is hosted by the Raleigh Lions Club and will benefit local charities. On Friday visitors can also check out: Meredith College’s Sizzlin’ September Concert in Dorton Arena featuring The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Cultivate a career at this year’s fair

Promoting the agriculture industry and consumer education have long been at the core of the State Fair’s mission. A new exhibit at this year’s fair, Cultivate A Career, will add to this great tradition. Located near gate 12, the exhibit is designed to highlight the importance of agricultural careers to our economy in a fun and interactive environment. Visitors will have the chance to “test drive” a high-tech tractor, try their hand at building a small-scale model barn, analyze plant and animal specimens with a microscope and promote their experiences within the exhibit to others. Weekend Update: September 9-11

Friday and Saturday, the N.C. State Charity Classic Horse Show will be held in the Hunt Horse Complex. The show will include 50 competitions and performances and more than 25 horse academies for children. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Lions Club. The Light 103.9 presents the annual Unity in the Community Day in the Scott Building and parking lot at Blue Ridge and Trinity Roads Saturday. Weekend Update: September 2-4

This weekend, the fairgrounds is packed full of wonderful events. kicking off with the  Equestrian Exchange Consignment Sale which began Wednesday in the Holshouser Building. This event offers visitors the opportunity to buy and consign anything related to the equestrian sport. Four other events this weekend are also animal related: Starting Friday local kennel clubs will host all-breed dog shows, dog obedience competitions and rally trials as part of the Kennel Club Dog Shows in the Graham Building. Weekend Update: August 25-27

Friday through Sunday the Triangle Farms will host a NCHJA “C” Horse Show in the Hunt Horse Complex. The event will feature Hunter/Jumper style competition On Saturday, the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Greater Raleigh will host its annual Children’s Good News Spectacular. The event will be held in the Graham Building and will feature inflatable games and rides, popcorn, snow cones, drinks, an illusion show and several gospel presentations. N.C. State Fair decorated-cakes contest a winner with the public

The N.C. State Fair’s decorated-cakes competition is a real crowd pleaser, drawing a line of visitors past the many entries on display in the Education Building. Professional and amateur decorators create ornate, multi-tiered cakes that look too pretty to eat. Robin Bilodeau of Chapel Hill is a frequent entrant in the competition, and she attributes its popularity in part to people’s fascination with the complexity of the creations on display. The Carolina Fall Boat Show & Sale comes to the Graham Building Saturday and Sunday. Boating enthusiasts will find more than than 25 dealers showing board and personal watercraft in all price ranges. Friday and Saturday the Children’s Spring Clothing and Baby Equipment Sale will be held in the Scott Building. Sponsored by Triangle Mothers of Twins & Triplets, the event will feature gently used items on sale at drastically reduced prices.
