Excited!

Okay, I’ve admitted it before, but I’ll say it again…I’m a real geek. (And I’m okay with that.) We have finally put the final touches on the Web site design and let me tell you, I’m super excited to get my hands on it and start populating it so that we can make it live.  I love the look and feel of the design, which goes along the lines of the poster that was so well received when we announced the theme. Our graphic designer, Amanda Meares, has outdone herself once again (while having to listen and take into account…

Abracadabra! Steve Trash is here

The fair is going to be a whole lotta green this year with the help of one man – Steve Trash, Rockin’ Eco Hero and Kid Comedian. After performing all over the world, Steve will bring his green magic show to the N.C. State Fair for the first time this October. The show is filled with eco-illusions, magic tricks and comedy that provide children with tips on being green. Steve will make his N.C. State Fair debut on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 5 p.m., in the Kiddieland Fun Park. He will perform daily at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. starting Friday,…

First Week

This week is my first week working with the N.C. State Fair. I’m excited about the opportunity, and to be honest, a little nervous. The phrase “no pressure” has ended most sentences instead of a punctuation mark. You were selected from 714 applicants (no pressure) You are our first male intern (no pressure) Your first blog post is due at the end of this week (no pressure) I thought I would start by sharing a little bit about my home for the next 10 weeks. I imagine some of you think, as I did, that all the behind-the-scenes magic of…

Returning Line-up

One of the more difficult jobs at the Fair is trying to determine the right balance for the grounds entertainment. We want to keep things fresh and bring in new acts, but also keep in mind that fairgoers create traditions of going to see certain acts year after year. This balancing act falls in the lap of our Assistant Fair Manager, Mike Pleasant. Mike has to decide when an act has run its course or when to bring it back. Sometimes that means not booking a favorite act for a year or two. Or in the case of an act…

T-shirts from State Fairs past: 2007

While making room for our new Fair intern, Paul, to start next week, we unearthed a pile of T-shirts left over from a few years ago. Each year, the T-shirt has a different look to reflect that year’s theme, logo and design. For a long time, they were just a solid color t-shirt (most often white) with the logo printed on it. The 2007 Fair saw the debut of the very popular tie-dye T-shirt. Not for shrinking violets, these neon yellow and green tees reflected the “Seriously Twisted Fun” theme in more ways than one. You can also spot the…

Behind the Deep Fried blog

If you kept up with our blog during last year’s Fair, you may have noticed our Deep Fried blog has undergone a bit of a face lift since we last brought you our behind-the-scenes look into the 11-day celebration of food, fun and agriculture. We moved the blog from Blogger to WordPress, after enjoying the benefits and customization options of our departmental WordPress blog, In the Field.  We’ll still be able to bring you videos and pictures like last year, as well as any podcasts we cook up (or should that be fry up?) . With the help of graphic…

The 2009 State Fair theme…it makes us, well, happy!

Maybe it’s just the way we say it when we’re walking around the office, or maybe we’re just a little too excited about this year’s Fair, but the 2009 N.C. State Fair theme always brings smiles to our faces when we say it out loud. “A Whole Lotta Happy.” Yep, that’s the theme for this year’s State Fair (Oct. 15-25, in case you haven’t already marked it on your calendar). I’m not exactly sure how this one came up in our brainstorming session, but it has brought smiles to our faces for the last four months and we are happy…
