Press Office Challenge: Flu-shot duo edition

In our continuing quest to do things we’ve never done at the N.C. State Fair, Firecracker and I teamed up to get a seasonal flu shot from Kerr Drugs. The pharmacy is offering flu shots at two locations on the fairgrounds: in the dome on the southeast side of Dorton Arena and at a booth outside the Village of Yesteryear. I’ve been getting the seasonal flu shot for several years now, ever since that winter when my then-infant daughter brought home a flu bug from daycare and shared it with the whole family. But I’d never gotten a flu shot…

Neomonde baking demonstrations at Heritage Circle

Fairgoers will notice a new smell wafting from Heritage Circle this weekend. The fresh-baked bread from Neomonde Baking Company joins the smells of warm apple cider and cured tobacco in a demonstration tent beside the old chapel. Artisans from the local bakery will spend four hours each day, starting today, bringing volunteers on stage to create some of the store’s signature recipes. The exhibit also featured artisan breads for sample. Here are some highlights from last Sunday’s demonstration: If you missed the baking demonstrations last weekend, you still have time to see and taste the delicious breads today through Sunday, Oct. 22-25, from 4…

Deep Fried Ambassador update: Spider Girl + Barrel Monster = State Fair Love

Our Deep Fried Ambassador is busy blogging about all things N.C. State Fair related. We’ll re-post all of her Fair entries, but be sure to check out her Pretty*Swell blog. (This is part 2 of the “Whole Lotta Loony” series chronicling the adventures of your Deep-Fried Ambassador and Deputy Deep-Fried at the North Carolina State Fair.) How many times have you walked past one of the houses of oddities at the State Fair and been so curious to go inside?  But, for whatever reason, you avert your eyes and keep walking? Yeah, me too. Mostly because I’m so ridiculously sensitive…

Details behind the tweetup: All-inclusive edition

Tomorrow is the first Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup, and we are pumped! We can’t wait to meet Triangle (and beyond!) tweeps and show them a little bit about what makes the N.C. State Fair the…well…N.C. State Fair. We’ll be tweeting all night, and can’t wait to put Twitter names and faces together. We also want to give everyone who is coming out a big THANKS for helping us stock the shelves of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, since tomorrow is Food Lion Hunger Relief Day. Here are some more details we’ve posted over the last few…

Deep Fried Ambassador update: ‘Duputy’ and the big guns

Our Deep Fried Ambassador is busy blogging about all things N.C. State Fair related. We’ll re-post all of her Fair entries, but be sure to check out her Pretty*Swell blog. (This is part 1 of the “Whole Lotta Loony” series chronicling the adventures of your Deep-Fried Ambassador and Deputy Deep-Fried at the North Carolina State Fair.) The adventure begins! After pinning on our badges, specially engraved with “Ambassador” and “Duputy” (oops) by one of the fair’s bling vendors, we took off for the Jaycees’ Turkey Shoot. I’ve always been curious about what exactly happens behind that wooden barricade. Years ago (okay,…

I’ve never done that before … part II

So there’s this white tent that sits behind the Midway, next to the Holshouser Building. I’ve passed it a gazillion times as I’ve zipped along the backside of the fairgrounds trying to avoid the crowds. But I’ve never actually been inside or really known what they do there. So today, I decided to find out. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission hosts a nondescript tent to educate fairgoers on the important work of the commission, as well as to teach hunter safety. A friend’s sister always stopped by the booth to try her hand at target shooting, so when she was…

Press Office Challenge: Racin’ edition

I’ve been living a sheltered life. At least that’s what Dennis Cook says. Cook runs the Circle C Racing Pigs on the Hogway Speedway at the N.C. State Fair. At the start of the show, he says people who’ve never seen racing pigs have been sheltered. Consider me sheltered no more. Tuesday, I saw my first racing-pig show. I’m almost ashamed to admit that I’d never seen one in my five previous years in the State Fair Press Office. After all, it’s one of the most popular attractions at the Fair. Answering Firecracker’s challenge to do something we’ve never done…

So this morning, we trekked over to the Drag Strip, a 72-foot tall, 200-foot long slide to find out if this ride is worth the 4 tickets it takes to take this ride. Find out who wins the race and see Flying Bob’s review of this new ride: Deep Fried Tip: Get in the far right lane! It was fast!
