Roaming acts are up, down and all around

You never know where you will find one of the many free roaming acts at the Fair. These world-class entertainers can be found high among the trees, scooting along the grounds and everywhere in between. For starters, look up to the sky. You might see our resident stilt walker, Carrie McQueen, juggling through the crowd on her extended legs. She’s back this year with all of her eccentric costumes. Rock-It the Robot, towering at 9 feet tall, won’t be hard to find either. If you have trouble, listen for the music  and the crowd dancing to the beat around him. There are plenty…

Concert lovers: Tickets go on sale Monday at 10 a.m.

Hoping to be in the front row for your favorite concerts at the State Fair? Then you better be sitting in front of you computer at 10 a.m. on Monday morning. That’s when we’ll flip the switch and tickets will go on sale. The first hour is usually pretty hectic and the website can get bogged down for little awhile as everyone tries to get those coveted seats. So I’m recycling our annual tips on how to have a successful concert ticket purchase: BE PATIENT! Things may run a little slow, but your order won’t time-out. Go to the State…

Sweet Corn gives a bittersweet “see ya later”

When I think about dairy cows, deep-fried foods, bright lights and spinning rides, my heart skips a beat. Therefore, when presented with the opportunity to intern for the N.C. State Fair, I could have been mistaken for a 4-year-old riding the spinning tea cups. Yup, I was that happy. During my 10-week internship with the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services I have interviewed blue-ribbon chefs, selected our first deep-fried photographer, promoted Blueberry Day and starred in a video or two. However, my most extensive project involved creating a 12-page newspaper supplement for children in the local area. While…

Up in the sky

We know some of the best photographs from the Fair come from you. That’s why we recently announced a new photography feature for all our social media friends on Facebook.  To participate, just upload your past N.C. State Fair photos to our fan page. We’ll pick a few of our favorites leading up to the Fair such as this one from Chari Cutshall. The Vertigo attracted a lot of attention at last year’s Fair from ride enthusiasts looking for the latest thrill and photographers looking for a great shot. It was one of the most-photographed rides, next to the Ferris wheel, at the Fair. We chose Chari’s…

We are go for launch…

The 2010 N.C. State Fair website is now live, and includes most of the information you will need to plan your trip to the Fair this October, but it’s still a work in progress. Bookmark the site, share the URL with your friends and check back often as we update it with even more information in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we have plenty of promotions to keep your deep-fried appetite under control. One promotion, 10,000 Fans of Summer, ends today at 5 p.m. If we get 10,000 Facebook fans by then, we will offer all our Facebook fans an adult admission ticket for the group…

100 days, 100 Ways to Celebrate What’s Great (Part 2)

This morning, we posted the first half of our top 100 must-do list for the N.C. State Fair. The list includes the rides, entertainment, exhibits and food that we enjoy each year. Below is the second half of our list. With 11 days of activities, we couldn’t cover everything in the top 100. What did we miss? What makes the N.C. State Fair great for you? Winning a stuffed animal on the Midway Chocolate fudge Cotton candy Screaming as loud as possible while riding the Zipper. The rush of air every time the cars roll by on the giant roller…

We’re busy planning one of North Carolina’s largest events, and we imagine a few of you are already planning your own trips to the Fair. 10,000 fans of summer

In 2008, we created a Facebook profile for the N.C. State Fair. We were humming along until we tried to accept our 5,001st friend request during the 2009 Fair. Facebook places a cap on the number of friends a profile is allowed to have – 5,000. Bummer. So, we created a Facebook fan page to connect with all of our N.C. State Fair fans. Maintaining two profiles for the same event has been difficult and confusing. This summer, we began transitioning profile friends over to our Facebook fan page. You can now like the N.C. State Fair and stay informed on the latest…

A photogenic affair

We love to see the State Fair through your eyes, or technically, your camera lens. That’s why we asked you to post your Fair photos from previous years to our Facebook fan page.   Thus far, our wonderful fans have posted pics ranging from poses with the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile and Clifford the Big Red Dog to rows of brightly colored apples and spinning fair rides.  Now, the time has come to announce the first deep-fried photographer who will win a prize pack full of State Fair goodies (Drum roll please). The lucky winner is our great fan and friend, Meredith Foster….
