Picking pics for prize packs

Each year, the Deep Fried crew takes thousands of photographs during the Fair. While our collection is large, some of the best photographs come from fairgoers just like you. You do a great job of capturing the excitement of the Midway, the serenity of the Flower Show, the tasty satisfaction of deep-fried food and the joy on fairgoers’ faces. Show us what you think is great by uploading your State Fair pics from previous years to the N.C. State Fair fan page. Throughout the summer, we’ll select some of our favorites to share on the Deep Fried blog, and if we pick your pics, we’ll send you a…

Feeling hot, hot, hot

For some, the first day of summer conjures relaxing images of swimming pools, backyard barbecues and family vacations. For us, the first day of summer is a “friendly” reminder that we have less than four months (115 days) to tell you about the great things happening at the 2010 N.C. State Fair. The sweat on our brows is from the summer heat, we promise. Speaking of heat, the Deep Fried blog will be sizzling this summer with more behind-the-scenes videos, interviews, entertainment updates, ticket information and contests. So sit back, relax and celebrate what’s great at the N.C. State Fair.

N.C. State Fair is cooking up some fantastic contests for 2010

The North Carolina State Fair is many things to many people, but an underlying theme is a celebration of tradition. The fair’s annual cooking contests, featuring a mix of friendly competition, local agricultural products and grandma’s time-tested recipes with some new twists, exemplify that.  The 2010 N.C. State Fair will feature 12 sponsored cooking contests focusing on everything from appetizers to main dishes to desserts. The contests are open to pretty much anyone—young and old, male and female and experienced and inexperienced cooks.  With a smidgen of this, a pinch of that and a dash of something else, winning recipes come from a diverse group…

What’s GREAT about the State Fair? Everything!

It goes without saying that I love the State Fair and I love my job. I was reminded of that last week as Sweet Corn and I went around the fairgrounds getting video footage for the target=”_blank”>announcement of the new State Fair theme. Our original idea was to get people around the fairgrounds to tell you what’s GREAT! about the N.C. State Fair. But everyone we came across had one of two answers (or sometimes both): “Everything” or “Just seeing people’s smiles.” When I prodded them for something more specific, the answers surprised me. When I asked about their favorite…

What’s so great about the N.C. State Fair?

It’s difficult to describe 11 fun-filled days of rides, games, exhibits, concerts and deep-fried goodness with a phrase. And yet, every year we do this by creating a new theme. This year, one question kept surfacing: “What’s your favorite part of the North Carolina State Fair?” Is it the agricultural exhibits, the entertainment, the rides or how about the food? The truth is that the N.C. State Fair has something for everyone; it’s all great. Check out the video below to see this year’s theme. If you have problems viewing the video, click target=”_blank”>here. We’re looking forward to celebrating everything that makes our State Fair…

New kid on the blog

As a rising senior, and hopeful public relations practitioner, I have had my fair share of internship experiences. Each experience has initially been marked by that “first-day-of-kindergarten,” anxious feeling. My first day working with the N.C. State Fair was no different. However, unlike my past experiences, my first day of work took place at the Got to Be NC Festival. My nerves were immediately calmed when my first work assignment involved strolling around the Carolina Fiberfest exhibit, watching an antique tractor parade, feeding alpacas and photographing lawn mower races. Yup, my thoughts exactly—I have the best summer internship by far….

Dusting off and gearing up

The dust has settled from the weekend’s lawn mower races and it’s time to gear up for the 2010 N.C. State Fair. Thanks to everyone who came out last weekend to the Got to Be NC Festival. We had a great time, and it was just the jolt we needed to wake up from our deep-fried stupor.   Planning for the 2010 Fair began the minute the 2009 Fair was over, and the deep-fried crew is ready to share with you everything that’s new. This year’s crew includes Bearded Lady, Firecracker, Flying Bob, GreenThing, Merrie Go Round and our newest deep-fried intern Sweet Corn. Over the coming…

Lawn mowers aren’t just for mowing…

The modified lawn mowers featured at the Got to Be NC Festival were not your grassy yard variety. Contestants took to the muddy track in the Sam Rand Grandstand early this afternoon to showcase their souped up mowers and driving skills.   Beginning the races, WQDR’s Marty Young and Mike Wheless braved the track for a friendly competition. After experiencing some mechnical difficulties, Wheless took second while a victorious Young crossed the finish line before a cheering audience.  The next races featured plenty of mud slinging. Drivers hung on as the low mowers skidded through turns spewing small flecks of mud behind them.  In addition to bragging…

Vendor space applications now available

One of my favorite things to do at the N.C. State Fair is peruse the products for sample and sale from the wide variety of vendors exhibiting around the fairgrounds. I also enjoy comparing the food concessionaire menus to find that perfect tasty treat. With more than 850,000 attendees just as curious (and hungry) as me, the  Fair offers an excellent opportunity to bolster your business or brand. Think you might have a Deep Fried bestseller? Visit the vendors section of our Web site to download an application and information. But don’t wait — applications are due by July 1. Indoor and outdoor spaces are available, with a minimum of 8…
