The Deep Fried Ambassador says adios!

This is a guest blogger post by our Official Deep Fried Ambassador, Ashlee. We’ll be reposting her State Fair adventures from her Miss Ashlee blog throughout the Fair. Now What Do I Do?? Now that I have to say goodbye to my term as Deep Fried Ambassador I’m not really sure what to do with my life! I’m not really sure how to navigate Kroger anymore because they don’t have very many foods on a stick or covered in powdered sugar. I tried wheeling around on my chair at work, but I just don’t get the same butterfly feeling in…

Last car rollin’

The State Fair Demolition Derby championships took place this afternoon, and drivers in four categories rolled away with victories. Nikki Goins defeated fellow Goldsboro resident Megan Creech for the women’s championship. In the 4-cylinder championship, Jimmy Goodman of Wilmington bested Rickey Cooke of Jamestown. Jimmy Cisco of Raleigh took out Donald Stokes of Goldsboro to win the 6-cylinder title. And Chris Lane of Goldsboro won the 8-cylinder championship by knocking out the car driven by Jenna Camptella of Raleigh. Camptella didn’t leave the Fair empty-handed. Her car, “Foxy Lady,” won the Crowd’s Choice Best Appearance Award, and Donnie McCullen of…

It has been so much fun to be the Deep Fried Ambassador! I’ve connected to people on a whole new level. I’ve discovered the Fair in a whole new light and enjoyed myself to the max!!! It’s with sweet (literally) memories that I tuck this year’s fair into the folds of life and savor it for another year. The State Fair is such a great reminder that another season…

Three tents you won’t want to miss

On the east side of the fairgrounds, there are three large tents where you can sample hush puppies and specialty sauces, learn about our state’s growing green industry and even plant a sunflower to take home with you. The Got to Be NC Agriculture tent, Green NC tent and Seed Survivor exhibit are must-see destinations for families at the Fair. In the Got to Be NC tent, located outside the Kerr Scott Building, fairgoers can sample and purchase food from North Carolina vendors selling everything from ice cream to barbecue sauce. The Green NC tent is located just inside Gate…

Susan G. Komen for the Cure will be “going pink” for the cure today. Komen On the Go encourages fairgoers to pledge support for the cause and of course, wear pink. The Komen…

Deep Fried Challenge: Trying something new that was really something old

Last year Firecracker issued the challenge to all of us in the State Fair Press Office to do something at the State Fair that we had never done before. So, in my 14th year in the Press Office, my co-workers and I took target practice at the Raleigh Jaycees Turkey Shoot.  And I also tried my hand at tying tobacco, both skills I must admit I didn’t really master all that well. We are continuing the challenge this year and are even including some reader-suggested ideas, including this one from Tuesday. My challenge for this year was to experience a different aspect…

Deep Fried Ambassador: Deep fried ride edition

This is a guest blogger post by our Official Deep Fried Ambassador, Ashlee. We’ll be reposting her State Fair adventures from her Miss Ashlee blog throughout the Fair. You Spin Me Right Round I’m a wuss.I’ll admit it. I was 8 the first time we went to Disneyland and was scared out of my mind by something as simple as the teacups. My little sister, on the other hand, was fearless and on our trip to Knott’s Berry Farm rode Montazuma’s revenge with nothing but sheer joy. Crazy. I don’t think I rode a roller coaster until I was nearly…
