Deep Fried Ambassador: Racing Pigs Edition

This is a guest blogger post by our Official Deep Fried Ambassador, Ashlee. We’ll be reposting her State Fair adventures from her Miss Ashlee blog throughout the Fair. Points for Procuring a Post at the Popular Proceedings of Pigs! Next to the Harley-Davidson booth and the wee little zoo (with a camel I might add) is the Hogway Speedway… where fabulous little critters race for nothing less than cheeeeeese dooooodles! (Said in deep announcer type voice!) To watch the performance of the petite potbellied porkies in action, though, here are several snip-its of suggestions. 1) Get something to eat. Or maybe…

Decorated cakes: The Best in Show

When I think of decorated cakes, I think of the ballroom gown-shaped Barbie cake and the gummy worm mud cake that I ate on my ninth and 10th birthdays. However, (no offense to my mother, household birthday cake creator extraordinaire), the decorated cakes that you will find in the Education Building at the N.C. State Fair are simply incomparable. The cakes are one of the most popular competition attractions; typically drawing lines of people wanting to get a glimpse of the cake creativity on display. Professional, novice and junior cake artists enter the cake decorating competitions for an opportunity to…

Deep Fried Review: Fried Frito Pie

My mouth has been watering in anticipation of tasting the Fried Frito Pie since I first heard it was going to be at the N.C. State Fair. I simply couldn’t resist this recipe description: Texas chili mixed with mild cheddar cheese, wrapped in Frito corn chips, then battered and fried. The dish comes with a side of salsa and sour cream. Steph’s Strawberries, located near the Village of Yesteryear in front of the Rabbit Barn, serves up a large portion of the deep-fried treat. Check out this deep fried review: Note: If video doesn’t appear, try refreshing your browser. Check back during the Fair…

Accepting the fan-selected press office challenges

Earlier this week, we asked for suggestions from our social media friends of things they would like to see covered on the Deep Fried blog. Thanks to everyone who sent us ideas. They were all creative – some were really creative – but ultimately we had to pick three. Congratulations to Cristy B, Debbie Quinn and Jessica! We’ll be sending you a family prize pack, which includes four free tickets to the Fair and other cool State Fair swag. Be sure to check the blog later this week as we post the fan-selected press office challenges, our own press office…

New Food: BlueBird Cupcakes

Cindy McGee graduated from N.C. State University in August facing a tough job market. Instead of giving up hope, she took her love of baking and started BlueBird Cupcakes, a gourmet cupcake business that is making its debut at the 2010 N.C. State Fair. The sociology major turned baker offers seven varieties of cupcakes: Snickers, Pumpkin Spice, Caramel Apple, Red Velvet, S’mores, Very Vanilla and Maple Bacon. Cindy says she bakes around 300 cupcakes each night and goes home around midday to bake 300 more. Her dedication ensures that customers will get a quality cupcake no matter when they come…

Photos from the Fair: 50 years of State Fair fun

Former Raleigh resident Tom Vestal has attended 50 consecutive N.C. State Fairs, beginning in 1960 when he was a freshman at N.C. State University. Vestal, a retired pastor who now splits his time between Yadkin County and Mouth of Wilson, Va., spent a few minutes Friday visiting with Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler in Heritage Circle. Want to know more about Vestal’s 50 years at the Fair? Check out the WRAL story below. Note: If video doesn’t appear, try refreshing the browser.

Deep Fried Ambassador: Fine Folks

This is a guest blogger post by our Official Deep Fried Ambassador, Ashlee. We’ll be reposting her State Fair adventures from her Miss Ashlee blog throughout the Fair. Fine Folks I love the people at the Fair! You really get to meet all sorts of folks and it’s just fun to watch and interact with them. Perhaps it’s because I’m a psychologist…. I love to see the small kids who are in sensory overload and are crying in their strollers. Though I feel for them, I love to see the look of desperation on their parent’s faces. I love to see…

Krispy Kreme Burger: I can’t believe I ate the whole thing

You should know that we walk a lot during the Fair. On average, around five miles a day. I know that doesn’t make up for what I did today because today I ate a Krispy Kreme bacon cheeseburger. That’s right, a hamburger patty, cheese and bacon between two Krispy Kreme doughnuts. You can find the Krispy Kreme burger at several locations around the Fair (use the new food finder to see them all). I tried the Murphy House’s version, which is ironically topped with lettuce and tomato. Watch the video below to see how it went: Note: If video doesn’t…
