Steve Brogan isn’t your typical one-man show. Sure, he’s the only person in the show, but that doesn’t mean he’s all alone. That’s because Steve is a nationally recognized ventriloquist and voices an entire cast of characters, from an old curmudgeon to a talking duck. He comes from a family of ventriloquists and has turned a childhood hobby into a career, with television appearances on Good Morning America and The Fox Network. Fairgoers are sure to be entertained with his comedic performances outside the Expo Center during the Fair.
Steve will make his N.C. State Fair debut on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 3:30 p.m., outside the Expo Center. Starting Friday, Oct. 15, he will perform daily at 1, 3 and 5 p.m., with additional shows at 11 a.m. on Saturdays.
We recently spent a little time getting to know Steve, and here’s what we found out about him and his show:
Who is Steve Brogan?
I’m a comedian/ventriloquist who loves to see and hear people laugh. I know that when people are laughing, they are not thinking about anything else. Laughter is “like a good medicine” and can relieve the stress of the day, and I often call myself a “MD,” (man with dummy!). I feel very fortunate to be able to make people laugh for my living.
What can we expect from your show?
Audiences can expect to laugh, to experience an expertly skilled ventriloquist, to laugh more, to enjoy music, to laugh again, to participate in the show and laugh more.
Which “friends” will be joining Steve this year?
My shows include many different characters, some of which are Rodney Duckerfield, a talking duck; Otis, your typical redneck neighbor; Elmer, a curmudgeon old man; Edgar, slightly balding middle-aged man; and volunteers from the audience.
Who should come to the show?
Anyone who loves to laugh should attend. If you don’t like to laugh or your doctor as told you “NO LAUGHING!” please don’t attend the shows.
This is your first time performing at the N.C. State Fair, but is this your first time at the Fair?
No, I’ve attended the N.C. State Fair many years ago, but I’m excited to be performing as part of the fair this year.
What’s your favorite part of the State Fair?
I can’t say that I have a more favorite part than another. It is such a unique experience and I enjoy it all. I can honestly say, I look forward to visiting all areas of the Fair.
What’s your favorite deep-fried food?
I just heard of a new fair favorite that I have never tried, called Pig in the Mud – cooked bacon that is dipped in chocolate. I might have to try it! (Note: You can watch video of the Deep Fried crew trying chocolate-covered bacon at the 2009 N.C. State Fair here.)
When you’re not performing, what do you do for fun?
I enjoy spending time at the beach and fishing.
Describe your performance in one sentence.
Hilariously funny, family friendly entertainment with audience participation.
