Fair pics: Pumpkins

The pumpkins below should inspire you to enter the State Farmers Market’s Great Pumpkin Contest, which will give cash prizes to the largest pumpkins as well as the most creatively decorated. At the very least, drop by the market in Raleigh to see the gourds. I remember last year there was a pumpkin decorated as an owl that inspired me to do a fancy jack-o-lantern of my own (i.e. one step beyond the usual eyes and crooked grin). And be on the lookout for the enormous pumpkins competing at the Fair in the Expo Building! Facebook friend Jean Odom captured…

Jason Aldean, etc.

So I’m watching CMT this morning and I start noticing that they keep playing songs by performers coming to the N.C. State Fair this year. It started with “Lookin’ for a Good Time” by Lady Antebellum, then “Johnny and June” by Heidi Newfield, followed by”Relentless” by Jason Aldean. In fact, a quick search of CMT’s Top 20 Countdown for the week of Oct. 3 features four State Fair acts. Montgomery Gentry comes in at #19 with “Roll With Me,” Jason Aldean is at #18, Lady Antebellum is at #17 and Heidi Newfield is at #11. Speaks well for the lineup…

Keep it clean

What’s more fun that spray painting a storm drain? Spray painting about 200 storm drains! Thanks to a few tireless community volunteers, educational outreach folks from the Division of Water Quality, a little ‘ole me, Green Thing (I’m the one taking the picture), the State Fair is now “tagged” with a very important message – don’t toss litter down a storm drain because it pollutes our rivers and streams! In fact, stormwater runoff is the number one cause of water pollution in North Carolina and the nation, according to the N.C. Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources. We met this…

No Pain, No Gain

It’s been a long, dusty summer at the State Fairgrounds while a large parking lot underwent a transformation, but I must say that the result is worth it. The area between the Grandstand, Dorton Arena and the Expo Center (A.K.A. “the Dorton Triangle”) was demolished and rebuilt this summer. The result is a level, safe parking area that will be home to lots of food concessionaires during the fair. The nice part is there are two areas carved out for the express purpose of creating seating for fair patrons. The retaining walls will create a lot of seating on their…

Pants Dance Hilarity

A couple Storm Squad dancers from the Carolina Hurricanes have entered our Pants Dance Revolution contest (as you should too) and this video is HILARIOUS. Make sure to watch it all the way through til the end to see how they incorporate Jared the Subway Guy’s enormous pants into the dance. (Hint: BOTH of the dancers end up in the pants!)
