One week from today!

Toby Mac Yep, tickets go on sale ONE WEEK from today. To get the best seats in the house, you’ll need to be at your computer bright and early as tickets will go on sale at 8 a.m. Word from the State Fairgrounds is that Toby Mac, Skillet/Leeland and Bobby Flay all are generating a lot of interest. Will we break last year’s record of five sold-out concerts? All the concert tickets will go on sale at the same time, except the Wednesday night mystery guest, which will go on sale in early September. Admission and ride vouchers will also…

A green thing or two.

When you visit the State Fair this year, keep an eye out for some green things. For one, you may notice that there are more places to sit and relax in a natural environment. What was once the parking lot between Dorton Arena, the Jim Graham Building and Expo Center is now under construction to become the Dorton Triangle, complete with two, large grass and flower-filled havens, seating and eventually trees for shade. But the greenest thing about the Dorton Triangle construction project, other than the new green places to sit, is that the old asphalt and underlying stone will…

To be announced, part II

A few weeks ago, I posted about our mystery guests on the Dorton Arena lineup. One of those artists was announced last week: Lady Antebellum and Heidi Newfield will perform on Sunday, Oct. 19 in Dorton Arena. The second blank spot in the line up will stay blank for a little while longer. It’s still causing quite the stir. I can confirm that Kellie Pickler is NOT the mystery artist. Sorry. Maybe next year! With all the input, maybe we’ll have a contest next year to fill in the blank for a date on our music roster. Stay tuned!

Wanted: Friends

It’s official. The State Fair is totally hip and cool. Not that we weren’t before, but this is the first year that the Fair has gone virtual with this blog, a YouTube channel, and Facebook and MySpace pages. We decided to launch all of these sites to keep up with the changing pace of the 24 hour news world we now live in…and to connect with all of you! Are any of you State Fair-lovers out there also jumping on the social media bandwagon? It’s a good time to do it, as today Facebook unveiled its newest version that is…

Coming to a TV near you

Production of the State Fair’s TV commercials has begun. MSA, the advertising agency for the fair, proposed an interesting concept marrying still photography with animation. I would characterize the approach as the State Fair meets “South Park” (but without the profanity). Above is a glimpse of the photo shoot that took place July 16 at MSA’s studios. The actors were shot using a wide-angle lens, and their heads will be put on animated bodies in the commercials. Look for the finished ads on the air beginning in September, about a month before the fair opens.

Mario on So You Think You Can Dance

I’m a self-professed country music-aholic, so I’m usually first in line for the Fair’s big name country acts like Josh Turner and Jason Aldean and up-and-comers like Lady Antebellum. So when last night’s So You Think You Can Dance featured a unique hip hop dance choreographed to Mario’s “Skippin” song, I had to reconsider my straight-country ticket. Although the two talented dancers who danced this “Frankenstein” inspired routine (check it out below!) will be on their own nationwide tour, you can catch Mario’s song live on the stage of Dorton Arena Thursday, October 23. Tickets go on sale at 8…

Peachy keen

With the State Fair premium book now up online, North Carolinians are one step closer to getting one of those coveted blue ribbons. If you’re thinking about entering a peach dish, July 24th’s Peach Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh would be a great time to stock up on fresh, local peaches–after all, the prime time for getting N.C. peaches is right now. You could even take it one step further and use the Farmers Market’s peach dessert contest as a test run for your favorite peach dessert. Judging begins at 10…
