Who is the mystery artist?

Who is the mystery artist? (Photo from the 2007 N.C. State Fair – not the mystery artist!) Okay, I know we were supposed to announce the mystery artist “no later than Sept. 1,” but because of circumstances beyond our control, we are still unable to make the announcement. (Sorry!) We are legally obligated to keep our mouths shut for a few more days because of our contractual agreement with the artist. I will make one guarantee…we will make the announcement sometime on Saturday (expect it to be late in the day) and we will start ticket sales for this artist…

Married-Go-Round

Insert your family above! Searching Google news today for the N.C. State Fair turned up a very engaging hit. Raleigh photographer Ashley Stephenson of Nas Image photography posted a call to engaged couples, newlyweds and families who share her love for the Fair on her blog: My FAVORITE seasons are winter and fall. I love the colors in the fall, and feeling the cooler breeze slowly pushing out the heavy heat and humidity. My whole life I have always associated fall with the NC State Fair! We lived just a few miles from the fairgrounds- you could smell the food…

On the road again to a county fair

Did you know that North Carolina has 44 Agricultural Fairs across the state? You may know them as “county fairs,” and part of my job (when I’m not planning the new Green NC exhibit at the State Fair) is to visit each fair, with the help of my colleague Nikki Berryman, during the busiest of seasons – Fair season! Now, there are a lot of festivals and carnivals that take place throughout the year, but North Carolina’s Agricultural Fairs are different. Each fair is licensed to operate by the Commissioner of Agriculture, and is dedicated to improving the awareness of…

Fair Fan: Meredith Foster

On our Facebook, MySpace and Twitter pages, we’ve met some awesome people who really, really love their N.C. State Fair. So to highlight them, we’ll be interviewing our Fair Fans every week here on the Deep Fried blog. To kick it off, we talked with Meredith Foster, a Raleigh native, about her 2007 Fair marathon, her tips for making the most of your Fair experience, and the feel-good combination of funnel cakes and Diet Coke. Meredith, age 4, with Mr. McFeeley from Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood,at the State Fair UNC-TV booth (love the turtleneck!) Meredith today What’s in your CD player/on…

Blog Lovin’

As it’s plain to see from this blog, we love when people get excited about the Fair even before it rolls around. If you haven’t dropped by yet, make sure you check out Tara Calishain’s State Fair blog over at WRAL.com. She may be a tech reporter for the news station, but she’s a State Fair veteran who knows her stuff! We can’t wait to see what she talks about in the coming weeks. In last year’s coverage, the Fair-saavy blogger listed her Top Ten Things Not To Miss at the State Fair. It had some great “Extra Credit” and…

Wiki-Fair

Wikipedia, as you may know, is the encyclopedia of the 21st Century–minus the musty library smell and images of door to door salesmen peddling the latest set. Each entry is written by one, two, or even thousands of contributors familiar with the subject at hand (the word “wiki” literally means a type of collaborative Web site). It’s definitely not what you want to base your research paper on, but often times it can be the first entry that pops up when you do a Google search for a topic. The site allows visitors to directly edit each subject and its…

You’re with the Band – Catching up with the Wells Family

Sara, Jade & Eden Wells took some time to act as propsat the King BMX Stunt Show at the 2007 State Fair. The Wells Family Band out of Johnston County is returning to the Fair to perform on the Waterfall Stage. There’s a lot to love about this family (other than their great music). They have so much energy and charm … and they really like being together. Plus, they shared their State Fair experiences with the world last year through their video posts on YouTube called “You’re with the Band.” (They even videoed their performance at our media luncheon!…

The “glamorous” side of PR

One of the most interesting things about working with the State Fair is the unusual requests we sometimes have the chance to “assist” with. During my 12 years with the Fair, there have been both fun and “interesting” opportunities. I’m usually game for the more off-the-wall requests because I always think they make for great stories. So whenever I get the call that starts with, “I need a favor …,” I prepare myself. My Top Five “opportunities” in order of occurrence are:1. Taking country music singer Pam Tillis and one of her band mates antique shopping around Raleigh. We hit a…

New Rides @ the N.C. State Fair

The Claw in action at the 2007 N.C. State Fair I had a chance yesterday to talk with Charlie Belknap from Powers Great American Midways, the official carnival provider of the 2008 N.C. State Fair. Powers has been busy since we saw them last October. As a matter of fact, they’re in Maryland this week, traveling to New York next week, and on to Pennsylvania before making their way back south for the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair (Goldsboro) in September. According to Charlie, they’ve been busy and are anticipating another huge Midway at the Fair, with around 110 rides –…
