Catching up with Keith King

What do your favorite State Fair entertainers do during the other 354 days of the year? For many, traveling the country performing is a full-time gig, and it seems like a good way to make a living. We caught up recently with Keith King, owner of the King BMX Stunt Show http://www.bmxbikestuntshows.com/, and the person responsible for the high-flying thrill show in the Grandstand for the past nine years.Keith is a Durham native, who works full-time entertaining crowds with fancy flatland bicycle riding and outrageous ramped-up jumps. State Fair takes a walk with dinosaurs

The State Fair is going prehistoric … sort of. Today, RBC Center officials held a press conference to announce the upcoming “Walking with Dinosaurs — The Live Experience,” which will take place Oct. 22-26. The State Fair and the folks at the RBC Center are partnering on a promotion, and it means a good deal for people interested in both dinosaurs and the fair. Anybody who buys a ticket to “WWD” will get free admission to the fair (for info on “WWD” tickets, go to http://www.rbccenter.com/). Here’s a description of the show from the “WWD” press kit: A team of…

Toby Mac takes the lead!

Yep, Christian hip-hop artist, Toby Mac, has taken the early lead, despite a url mix-up on the part of yours truly. (Sorry to anyone this morning who tried to link to Toby Mac or Jason Aldean tickets and ended up in the Josh Turner ticket bin instead. It was quickly remedied, but an embarrassing gaff on my part. I do apologize!) But back to Toby Mac tickets….there are still plenty of great seats left, but as of Day One, he’s sold the most tickets. The assistant fair manager isn’t surprised because he had a lot of excited people e-mailing him…

Twitter!

You asked for it, and the N.C. State Fair is now on Twitter. You can follow all of our “tweets” at twitter.com/ncstatefair. For the unitiated, Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates (tweets) which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. (Thanks for the summary, Wikipedia!) It’s kind of like a blend of Facebook, text messaging and instant messaging. We’re really excited to use this during the Fair from all over the grounds. Can’t you see the tweets now? “NCStateFair is milking a cow in the Jim Graham Building”…”NCStateFair…

A green thing or two.

When you visit the State Fair this year, keep an eye out for some green things. For one, you may notice that there are more places to sit and relax in a natural environment. What was once the parking lot between Dorton Arena, the Jim Graham Building and Expo Center is now under construction to become the Dorton Triangle, complete with two, large grass and flower-filled havens, seating and eventually trees for shade. But the greenest thing about the Dorton Triangle construction project, other than the new green places to sit, is that the old asphalt and underlying stone will…

To be announced, part II

A few weeks ago, I posted about our mystery guests on the Dorton Arena lineup. One of those artists was announced last week: Lady Antebellum and Heidi Newfield will perform on Sunday, Oct. 19 in Dorton Arena. The second blank spot in the line up will stay blank for a little while longer. It’s still causing quite the stir. I can confirm that Kellie Pickler is NOT the mystery artist. Sorry. Maybe next year! With all the input, maybe we’ll have a contest next year to fill in the blank for a date on our music roster. Stay tuned!
