You’re with the Band – Catching up with the Wells Family

Sara, Jade & Eden Wells took some time to act as propsat the King BMX Stunt Show at the 2007 State Fair. The Wells Family Band out of Johnston County is returning to the Fair to perform on the Waterfall Stage. There’s a lot to love about this family (other than their great music). They have so much energy and charm … and they really like being together. Plus, they shared their State Fair experiences with the world last year through their video posts on YouTube called “You’re with the Band.” (They even videoed their performance at our media luncheon!…

The “glamorous” side of PR

One of the most interesting things about working with the State Fair is the unusual requests we sometimes have the chance to “assist” with. During my 12 years with the Fair, there have been both fun and “interesting” opportunities. I’m usually game for the more off-the-wall requests because I always think they make for great stories. So whenever I get the call that starts with, “I need a favor …,” I prepare myself. My Top Five “opportunities” in order of occurrence are:1. Taking country music singer Pam Tillis and one of her band mates antique shopping around Raleigh. We hit a…

New Rides @ the N.C. State Fair

The Claw in action at the 2007 N.C. State Fair I had a chance yesterday to talk with Charlie Belknap from Powers Great American Midways, the official carnival provider of the 2008 N.C. State Fair. Powers has been busy since we saw them last October. As a matter of fact, they’re in Maryland this week, traveling to New York next week, and on to Pennsylvania before making their way back south for the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair (Goldsboro) in September. According to Charlie, they’ve been busy and are anticipating another huge Midway at the Fair, with around 110 rides –…

Q&A: Statue Viva’s Michelle Harrell

No, an ancient statue from the N.C. Museum of Art didn’t escape and make its way across Blue Ridge Road to the fairgrounds–that’s just Michelle Harrell, creator and performer in the Fair’s Statue Viva entertainment and resident ‘Poddle Mama’ for the new Michelle’s Magical Poodles show. You can find her roaming all around the fairgrounds posing as famous statues from around the world and in the Kiddieland Fun Park everyday during the Fair at 2 and 4 p.m. How did you first get started?I was inspired by a Swiss man in Key West, Florida. I saw him create a kind…

Scrapbooking at the Fair

Scrapblog is a really neat site that allows you to combine photos and text into pre-made scrapbook pages based around different themes. It’s super easy and looks really professional–and best of all, it allows you to post your creations straight to sites such as Blogger, WordPress, Facebook and MySpace. I used the road trip one above–because what’s better than piling in the car with the whole family and making your way to the Fair? Scroll through the three pages I created with pictures from past Fairs. (If you’re having trouble loading the pages, click on “View Full Screen” to blow…

What do YOU want to know?

We love bringing this blog to you, 69 whole days before the Fair even begins! You can’t find Keith King’s favorite Fair foods, teasers for our 2008 ad campaign or Mystery Artist info anywhere else. But…we’re curious as to what YOU want to know. If there’s a Fair celebrity you’d love to hear from, a burning question weighing on your mind or just a suggestion for a topic to cover, comment on the post here or shoot an e-mail over to karlie.justus@ncmail.net.

Catching up with Keith King

What do your favorite State Fair entertainers do during the other 354 days of the year? For many, traveling the country performing is a full-time gig, and it seems like a good way to make a living. We caught up recently with Keith King, owner of the King BMX Stunt Show http://www.bmxbikestuntshows.com/, and the person responsible for the high-flying thrill show in the Grandstand for the past nine years.Keith is a Durham native, who works full-time entertaining crowds with fancy flatland bicycle riding and outrageous ramped-up jumps. The bike stunt show marks its 10th anniversary at the State Fair and the…

State Fair takes a walk with dinosaurs

The State Fair is going prehistoric … sort of. Today, RBC Center officials held a press conference to announce the upcoming “Walking with Dinosaurs — The Live Experience,” which will take place Oct. 22-26. The State Fair and the folks at the RBC Center are partnering on a promotion, and it means a good deal for people interested in both dinosaurs and the fair. Anybody who buys a ticket to “WWD” will get free admission to the fair (for info on “WWD” tickets, go to http://www.rbccenter.com/). Here’s a description of the show from the “WWD” press kit: A team of…

Toby Mac takes the lead!

Yep, Christian hip-hop artist, Toby Mac, has taken the early lead, despite a url mix-up on the part of yours truly. (Sorry to anyone this morning who tried to link to Toby Mac or Jason Aldean tickets and ended up in the Josh Turner ticket bin instead. It was quickly remedied, but an embarrassing gaff on my part. I do apologize!) But back to Toby Mac tickets….there are still plenty of great seats left, but as of Day One, he’s sold the most tickets. The assistant fair manager isn’t surprised because he had a lot of excited people e-mailing him…
