FREE: Grounds entertainment

On any given day at the N.C. State Fair, you can catch more than 20 free performances from our lineup of talented grounds entertainment. You can see BMX stunt bikers flying through the air, witness the side-splitting powers of a comedy superhero and even see the super-fast speed of racing swine. They’re just a few of the free entertainment options, which also includes eight roaming acts and at least six daily concerts on the Waterfall and Bluegrass stages. The following is a rundown of this year’s grounds acts. What are your favorite acts at the State Fair? Circle “C” Racing…

2 months away: Time to focus

Last week, I heard a great description of my job from a friend of mine. She was trying to explain to some out-of-state friends that in North Carolina, people stay excited about the State Fair all year long. According to her, our job is not about getting people excited about the fair; they already are. Instead, our job is about helping people focus on what they want to do this year at the fair. I really like that description. So, with just two months left between now and the start of the 2011 N.C. State Fair, it’s time to focus….

SPARK of Love

We love the fair around here, and if you follow this blog, you probably love the fair, too. You probably also know that this year’s theme is “Love A Fair.” If you love the fair as much as we do and have some artistic ability, then we have an opportunity for you to help us spread the “Love A Fair” theme. We’re looking for talented artists, designers and creative types to help us with a special State Fair promotion at artSPARK on Saturday, Sept. 17. For those of you who don’t know, artSPARK is a part of SPARKcon, a four-day…

Twitter roundup: Eight enlightening State Fair exhibits

So far, we’ve brought you some of the highlights in State Fair food, rides and games. For our last social media series on the fair’s attractions, we’re bringing you some of the best exhibits that the fair has to offer (#8enlighteningexhibits). Though the carnival aspects of the fair sometimes get more attention, the exhibits preserve our state’s culture, promote North Carolina agricultural products and provide opportunities for people from across the state to connect in areas of shared passion. In this way, the exhibits are at the core of what the fair is all about. The Antique Farm Machinery exhibit…

Tilt-A-Whirl here, signing off at least for now

Today marks my last day with the N.C. State Fair through North Carolina’s State Government Internship Program. Though it is cliche to say, I can’t believe that my time at the fair has come to a close so quickly. I feel as though it was just yesterday that I met all the wonderful people that I’ve worked with here. The good news is that I will be back to assist the Deep Fried Crew during their busiest time before, during and immediately after the fair. I know that my experience here will help me in my future career, but more…

Advance tickets available Monday at 10 a.m.

As a first-time homeowner (and subsequently, first-time mortgage payer), I like to save a buck wherever I can. Trust me when I say the best way to save money on admission and ride tickets to the State Fair is buying your tickets early. And, if you’re looking for a front-row seat to one of the target=”_blank”>Dorton Arena concerts, you’re definitely going to want to be in front of a computer when tickets go on sale Monday at 10 a.m. Tickets to grandstand events will also be available on Monday. We want your ticket-buying experience to be as smooth as possible,…

Getting fired up at the fairgrounds

With three-digit temperatures at the State Fairgrounds this week, you might say things are really heating up as we prepare for the 2011 N.C. State Fair. The temperatures have been sweltering in Raleigh recently, but the promise of cooler temperatures and fair-like weather is just three months away. In case you missed it, we launched our new website last week. This is your one-stop shop for all the information about this year’s fair. We’ll continue to update it with the latest information on agricultural exhibits, food, rides, entertainment and competitions as we get closer to the fair. And, speaking of…

Sharing is caring

Last week, we announced “Love A Fair“ as the 2011 N.C. State Fair theme. It’s been great to hear from everyone who remembers the first time the theme was used back in the 70s. Thanks for sharing your memories with us. Honestly, hearing stories from fairgoers is one of the best parts of this job. Sure, we get to test the latest rides and try the newest deep-fried creation, but the best part is hearing from you. We spend so much time planning the Fair each year that we don’t get to enjoy it like everyone else. So, it’s nice…

Announcing the 2011 N.C. State Fair theme

Each year, we are tasked with creating a theme and logo for the coming State Fair. This is done in conjunction with our advertising agency. It’s not easy to encapsulate in a few words the excitement, flavors, colors, people and traditions that are part of the Fair. It’s a process that takes several weeks, but we love this creative time and how it makes us think about the many things that make the State Fair special. We came up with a few serious contenders for this year’s theme, but decided to recycle one from about 30 years ago. We really…

We’re just 5 months away

It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven months since the start of the 2010 N.C. State Fair. It seems like it was just yesterday we were trying our first Krispy Kreme Burger, going for a ride on the Fighter, and passing a new milestone with more than 1 million of our closest friends. We’re gearing up for the 2011 N.C. State Fair, Oct. 13-23, and can’t wait to share more about the food, rides and entertainment that make this one of the best events in the state. This weekend at the Fairgrounds, check out the following events: Region 10…
