See Jamey Johnson ‘In Color’ Monday, Oct. 19

I’ll admit: I’m a bit of a fan girl for Jamey Johnson. I don’t know if it’s the outlaw country vibe, his honest lyrics or that intense beard. (Okay, I know it’s not the beard. The beard is a little scary.) What I do know is his brand of country music is a unique mix of honky-tonk, outlaw and a little bit of the blues. If you’re on a first-name basis with Waylon, Willie, Merle and George, you’ll want to check him out. I’ve seen him in concert twice — first at the 2008 Got to Be NC Ag Jam…

Anoop Desai on strict N.C. State Fair training program after American Idol tour

WRAL posted a fun video this morning that features “local dude” Anoop Desai going through a rather rigorous training program of deep-fried foods, robot dance moves and some weather report push-ups. Anoop is also warming up his vocal cords for his first solo performance post-American Idol. He’ll be in Dorton Arena during the N.C. State Fair Thursday, Oct. 22, on Food Lion Hunger Relief Day. If you come by the Fair that night, you’ll end up with a pretty good deal, as four cans of food will get you in the gates for free and Anoop’s concert costs only $5….

A ‘Whole Lotta Happy’ with our commercials

If you want to know what makes a bunch of communications professionals happy, start with a Friday, add in a jeans day, put fresh Krispy Kreme donuts on the snack table and then send us all to an advertising meeting where we get to see and hear the final versions of the State Fair commercials. You can say that we are an office full of happy people today. We love how the look and feel of our logo and posters were translated into the television commercials; the radio commercials make us a whole lotta happy, too! The TV and radio…

N.C. State Fair ticket sales update

We’re  pretty pumped about how well ticket sales are going this year. As of Monday, we’ve sold double the number of admission tickets (16,800) and more than the double the amount of ride tickets (9,303) than we had last year at this point. Dorton Arena shows are also coming along nicely. There are some clear favorites in the lead, but local guys Jason Michael Carroll, who has sold 1,410 tickets, and Anoop Desai, who has sold 1,114, are also doing well. Jamey Johnson has grown the most over the past few weeks. Here’s a roundup of the top five show…

First week of fall on the fairgrounds

If you couldn’t tell by the recent weather, the turning of the seasons is upon us. Today marks the first day of fall, which can mean only one thing: There are only 22 days (!) until the N.C. State Fair opens. As the leaves start to turn, college football ramps up and we start breaking out our jackets, things are buzzing around the fairgrounds. This weekend is the last for shoppers to search for bargains at the Raleigh Flea Market at the State Fairgrounds before the market closes in preparation for the N.C. State Fair, which runs Oct. 15-25. The…

Artist Spotlight: North Carolina’s Jason Michael Carroll

For our first Artist Spotlight for the 2009 Dorton Arena concert lineup, we went straight to the source and asked North Carolina country singer Jason Michael Carroll to tell you himself why he’s excited to kick off the Fair Thursday, Oct. 15. Note: If video doesn’t appear, try refreshing your browser. I remember the first time I heard about Jason here in the Triangle. I was a senior at N.C. State, and was in an elective music business class offered by two guys who run a music management company in North Carolina. The pair of them had actually helped the…

Dorton concert ticket sales off to good start; fans can still find good seats

Advance tickets to the State Fair and Dorton Arena concerts went on sale Monday, and fans of North Carolina native Kellie Pickler hopped online quickly to snap up tickets.  As of early Friday, the Albemarle native and BFF of country superstar Taylor Swift led all other acts with 2,130 tickets sold. She is quickly closing in on the half-way mark of ticket sales. Rounding out the top 5 in sales are Third Day with 1,391 tickets sold, Blake Shelton with 1,252 tickets sold, Eric Church with 1,121 tickets sold and Jeremy Camp and Tenth Avenue North with just under 1,000 tickets sold.  While sales…

American Idol alum Anoop Desai rounds out Dorton Arena concert line-up

Since we announced the Dorton Arena line-up a couple weeks ago with one missing performer, our Facebook, blog and Twitter sites have been buzzing with suggestions on who should fill that spot. We heard a lot of good suggestions, but there was one particular artist campaign that stood out to us–mainly because the plea came from the artist himself. Our concerts this year have a decidedly local appeal, as N.C. natives Kellie Pickler, Eric Church and Jason Michael Carroll are all performing just a few hours (and in some cases, minutes) from where they grew up, and we’re happy to…

Behind the scenes with…Mike Pleasant, concert manager (Part 2)

Three weeks ago, we introduced you to Mike Pleasant, who books and manages all of the Dorton Arena concert entertainers before and during the Fair. Mike told us about some of his favorite performers over the years (Clay Aiken, Brad Paisley, MercyMe, Chris Daughtry and ’09 returning artist Kellie Pickler all made the cut) right before we announced this year’s lineup here on the Deep Fried Blog. (Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday, August 3.) This week, we’re back with part two of Mike’s interview, and this one is juicy. Mike took me on a tour of the…
