Each year, the Press Office hosts a pre-fair lunch for local media outlets. It’s a great opportunity to share what’s new at the fair. From the latest rides to newest grounds acts, we try to cover everything including the food. Today, Murphy House unveiled two new fair foods you’ll see this year – Deep Fried Cinnamon Rolls Covered in Bacon and Deep Fried Cupcakes. Check out our videos below to see what we thought of these new treats: If videos don’t play, try refreshing browser.   These aren’t the only new additions this year. You can find all the new…

The ScrumdiddlYUMtious

Willy Wonka would be proud. Granny Smith apple, dipped in caramel, rolled in toffee candy bits, dipped again in white chocolate, rolled in crushed Butterfinger candy, dipped AGAIN in rich, dark chocolate, rolled in semi-sweet chips, dipped again in chocolate, rolled in an array of nuts, topped with more chocolate and a specialty candy. This comes from Miss Debbies’ Specialty Apples in the Commercial Building, just inside the atrium. Her booth is a candy apple lover’s dream, with more flavors than you can dream. We are big fans of Miss Debbie’s apples. This year, we’ve sampled the Reese’s After Dark…

Food Review: Deep-fried candy and caramel apples

You may have stopped by one of McBride’s concession stands at the fair in the past. It’s particularly famous for its giant turkey legs, chicken, ribs and barbecue. This year, in addition to some of the old standbys, McBride’s also has a new twist on a State Fair classic with deep-fried candy and caramel apples. Firecracker and I tried to resist, but gave into temptation earlier this afternoon to bring you a review. Check out the video below to see what we thought:

Challenge accepted: Deep-fried brownies

Last week, we asked you to submit press office challenges you would like to see covered on the Deep Fried blog during the fair. We received about a dozen entries and narrowed the list to three. Our first entry was submitted by Dante H. It was really hard to pass up on this opportunity to sample deep-fried brownies. Check out the video below to see what we thought. (Hint: It was awesome!) Brownies are the latest deep-fried creation from Chef’s D-Lite, which also offers chicken-fried bacon, deep-fried mac & cheese and deep-fried moon pies. You can search for food near…

Food Review: Deep-fried chicken pot pie

Working in the State Fair press office can be stressful at times, but one of the best parts of the job is getting to sample fair food. We’ve done a lot of reviews for the Deep Fried blog, and here’s our latest one for deep-fried chicken pot pie at Woody’s City Market near the midway. In 2009, we reviewed Woody’s buffalo chicken rangoons and really liked them. Check out the video below to see what we thought about the deep fried chicken pot pie. Note: If video doesn’t play, try refreshing browser.

French Fry’s Food Finds

French Fry, a.k.a. Terri, doesn’t post on the Deep Fried blog but she is an integral part of the State Fair press office. Each year, French Fry creates a list of foods to eat during the fair. We’ll check with her every few days and give you an update on the list. Any of these items make it to your favorites list?

New food: Joe’s Big Dogs

There are hot dogs, and then there’s Joe’s Big Dogs. The silver diner car located between the Jim Graham Building and Dorton Arena has been a surprising sight for many people walking into the Fair from Gate 2. That’s because Joe Bushfan, owner of Joe’s Big Dogs, is selling some really big hot dogs.  You can get Joe’s all-beef hot dog in three sizes: quarter pound, half pound and yes, even a 1-pound hot dog. Blue Ribbon, Firecracker and I decided it was best to tackle the massive 1-pound hot dog together. We spent some time talking to Joe about…

New Food: BlueBird Cupcakes

Cindy McGee graduated from N.C. State University in August facing a tough job market. Instead of giving up hope, she took her love of baking and started BlueBird Cupcakes, a gourmet cupcake business that is making its debut at the 2010 N.C. State Fair. The sociology major turned baker offers seven varieties of cupcakes: Snickers, Pumpkin Spice, Caramel Apple, Red Velvet, S’mores, Very Vanilla and Maple Bacon. Cindy says she bakes around 300 cupcakes each night and goes home around midday to bake 300 more. Her dedication ensures that customers will get a quality cupcake no matter when they come…
