It’s all about the food

The annual Media Preview Lunch is on Monday, which means we will announce the new deep fried foods from folks in the Grandstand concession stand (aka Deep Fried Heaven). To hold you over until then, here’s a look at a few things we’ve already announced via Facebook and Instagram: 1. Eastern-style pulled-pork BBQ with homemade coleslaw deep fried in an egg roll wrap and served with a tangy BBQ sauce. Check out Woody’s down the hill to the Midway entrance nearest Dorton Arena. 2. Brinkley’s is doing a sour candy apple…Crushed warheads on a Granny Smith apple. Find Brinkley’s across…

Deep Fried Ambassador: Low-Cost and No-Cost

This is a guest blogger post by our Official Deep Fried Ambassador, Amy. We’ll be reposting her State Fair adventures from her Practical Cook blog throughout the Fair. Low-Cost and No-Cost: The Practical Cook’s Guide to Attending the Fair on a Budget (with video) The Practical Cook is thrilled to announce that aside from a bit of sunburn (one Gentle Reader referred to TPC’s complexion by way of a popular pork slogan, ahem), yesterday’s adventure with the Juniors went swimmingly. As the Juniors were bankrolling part of their own trip, it’s the perfect time to discuss attending the fair on a…

Twitter roundup: Seven sinful State Fair foods

Food has long had a central role in shaping the way people experience the N.C. State Fair. Premiums have been awarded for the production of top notch agricultural products since the first fair in 1853, and the first booths selling food appeared on the midway around 1900. At that time, many booths sold food to raise money for churches and civic organizations, and that is still true today. What’s more, in  a survey conducted a few years back, 70 percent of fairgoers chose food as one of the reasons they attended the N.C. State Fair. We wanted to highlight the…

New food: Joe’s Big Dogs

There are hot dogs, and then there’s Joe’s Big Dogs. The silver diner car located between the Jim Graham Building and Dorton Arena has been a surprising sight for many people walking into the Fair from Gate 2. That’s because Joe Bushfan, owner of Joe’s Big Dogs, is selling some really big hot dogs.  You can get Joe’s all-beef hot dog in three sizes: quarter pound, half pound and yes, even a 1-pound hot dog. Blue Ribbon, Firecracker and I decided it was best to tackle the massive 1-pound hot dog together. We spent some time talking to Joe about…

Deep Fried Review: Fried Frito Pie

My mouth has been watering in anticipation of tasting the Fried Frito Pie since I first heard it was going to be at the N.C. State Fair. I simply couldn’t resist this recipe description: Texas chili mixed with mild cheddar cheese, wrapped in Frito corn chips, then battered and fried. The dish comes with a side of salsa and sour cream. Steph’s Strawberries, located near the Village of Yesteryear in front of the Rabbit Barn, serves up a large portion of the deep-fried treat. Check out this deep fried review: Note: If video doesn’t appear, try refreshing your browser. Check back during the Fair…

Krispy Kreme Burger: I can’t believe I ate the whole thing

You should know that we walk a lot during the Fair. On average, around five miles a day. I know that doesn’t make up for what I did today because today I ate a Krispy Kreme bacon cheeseburger. That’s right, a hamburger patty, cheese and bacon between two Krispy Kreme doughnuts. You can find the Krispy Kreme burger at several locations around the Fair (use the new food finder to see them all). I tried the Murphy House’s version, which is ironically topped with lettuce and tomato. Watch the video below to see how it went: Note: If video doesn’t…
