Weekend Update: Preparations underway for N.C. State fair

The calendar turns to October this weekend which means the 2017 N.C. State Fair is just days away. To ensure the safety of workers and others on the grounds in the busy final days of preparation, access to the fairgrounds will be restricted from Friday night, Sept. 29, until 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, when the fair opens. Access to the grounds will be limited to those with special-access passes issued by the State Fair. Discover the Dinosaurs in the Expo Center

Visitors to the State Fairgrounds can travel back to prehistoric times via the Discover the Dinosaurs exhibit on Friday from noon to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Graham Building. The 2015 State Fair ended just over a week ago with attendance topping the 1 million mark. This week Casey Cardinal is offering a trip down memory lane to look back at his top five highlights from the fair. New assistant fair manager James Romer has developed many passions, from collecting rocks to horticulture and gardening. However, when it comes to his love for fairs, Romer said it just got into his blood as a child and has been there ever since. “Some of the best days of my life have been spent at fairs,” Romer said. “In fact, I met my wife at a county fair in Iowa.
