With less than 24 hours left before the gates open on the 2012 edition of the N.C. State Fair, employees and volunteers were busy putting the finishing touches on rides, concession stands, exhibits and the grounds. Gates will open for Preview Day on Thursday at 3 p.m. On Preview Day only, ride lovers can purchase a ride wristband for $28, good for any ride between 3:30 p.m. and midnight. Progress Photo – THREE days!

It was a cold, dreary day at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. But despite the weather conditions, a lot of progress was made. Rides arrived from across the state throughout the day and more food vendors came in. We also learned a new fair treat this year will be deep fried cinnamon rolls rolled in bacon. And the entry departments in each competitive area were busy getting things ready for the judges to show up. You’ve only got a few days left to take advantage of discounted tickets. Progress Photos: Tuesday

We walked around the fairgrounds today and noticed it’s looking a lot like the Fair. More than 100 rides are being assembled and inspected in the midway, old midway and Kiddieland. The Education Building is full of activity with judges tasting sweet baking entries and hanging quilts for display. In Dorton Arena, sound equipment is being installed for the nightly concerts, and in the Village of Yesteryear crafters are unloading their wares and preparing for 11 days of demonstrations. Progress Photo: Friday

Friday was a warm and beautiful day at the fairgrounds. The crew from Powers Great American Midways is putting together several rides including Fighter, the newest ride at the Fair. Many food vendors were spotted last weekend, and more will be placed into position this weekend. In the entry departments, workers were busy accepting entries and potential blue-ribbon winners. They’ll be even more activity this weekend, and we’ll be here to keep you posted on the progress.
