Ride Report: Fighter debuts in 2010

Do you spend your days at the Fair alternating between deep-fried goodness and stomach-churning rides? Well, this may interest you: Powers Great American Midways, which brought last year’s popular Vertigo ride, recently confirmed the latest ride to grace the midway at the N.C. State Fair. It’s called Fighter. According to the manufacturer, this ride combines the rotating movements of a carousel with the pendulum motion of a swing. This results in a smooth but exciting ride with unlimited variations. You can view a video of the ride below. Note: If video doesn’t appear, try refreshing your browser. Getting the ride to the…

100 days, 100 Ways to Celebrate What’s Great (Part 2)

This morning, we posted the first half of our top 100 must-do list for the N.C. State Fair. The list includes the rides, entertainment, exhibits and food that we enjoy each year. Below is the second half of our list. With 11 days of activities, we couldn’t cover everything in the top 100. What did we miss? What makes the N.C. State Fair great for you? Winning a stuffed animal on the Midway Chocolate fudge Cotton candy Screaming as loud as possible while riding the Zipper. The rush of air every time the cars roll by on the giant roller…

Will you use your Preview Day Unlimited Ride Wristband on this new ride?

While deep-fried food and heart-pounding thrill rides may not seem like the most natural of companions, the two always share the spotlight during the Fair. We’re always keeping an eye out for the newest additions to both, and we just learned that the ride pictured at left will debut at the N.C. State Fair in October. The ride is a combination of the beloved swings and a drop zone-type ride. As you can tell from the photo, riders are swung in a circle while the swings go up and down the high yellow pole. If this ride tops your to-do…

Five Reasons to Love the Fair

Triangle blogger Ginny Skalski (whose blog Ginny From the Blog always gets me humming old-school JLo) posted her five reasons why you must go to the Fair. Her post gives a run-down of her Fair adventures (a man clucking at a turkey to make it gobble back at him, composting worms, mock dream gardens) Her reasons, with some explanations: 1. Farm AnimalsHow often do you get to see goats play King of the Mountain or watch piglets suckle on their mom’s teat? Head over to the Jim Graham and Kelly Building to see this and more (for free).2. The FoodOK,…

One Week from today!

As previously mentioned, today was move in day for the Press Office. This was an unusual move-in day for us for two reasons. One, it didn’t rain, which means I can go ahead and make a weather prediction: it WILL rain on Oct. 27. It ALWAYS rains on either move in or move out day. Two, the fairgrounds is a beehive of activity that is not normal for one week before the fair starts. Usually we get out here and there is a smattering of food booths and rides on the grounds, but today, Kiddieland is looking almost complete and…

Midway Mania

WARNING: I was on this ride with a few screamers (um, not me, of course…) so make sure to turn your volume WAYYY DOWN before you click play. Your ear drums and co-workers will thank you! WRAL Blogger Tara Calashain dared us in her “North Carolina State Fair getting seriously online” post to record a first-person ride on the Midway. At the Mountain State Fair back in early September, I decided to do just that. So, with a tight grip on my camera and a purposely empty stomach, I grabbed a few friends and hopped on the Cortina Bob ride….

New Rides @ the N.C. State Fair

The Claw in action at the 2007 N.C. State Fair I had a chance yesterday to talk with Charlie Belknap from Powers Great American Midways, the official carnival provider of the 2008 N.C. State Fair. Powers has been busy since we saw them last October. As a matter of fact, they’re in Maryland this week, traveling to New York next week, and on to Pennsylvania before making their way back south for the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair (Goldsboro) in September. According to Charlie, they’ve been busy and are anticipating another huge Midway at the Fair, with around 110 rides –…
