That’s right, in just one month, we’ll open the gates and start the largest celebration in the state. Can’t wait another month? Here are five things you can do right now to join in the fun. 5. Share your State Fair memories: We’ve mentioned it a couple times on the blog (here and here), but the third times the charm. Behind the Scenes: Blue Ribbon Memories

State Fair fans have a new way to share their “Love A Fair” online with a website created by the State Library of North Carolina called Blue Ribbon Memories: Your History of the N.C. State Fair. As Flying Bob mentioned in a previous post, the website offers visitors a chance to search through old premium books and view State Fair photographs and memorabilia from the state collection. The really cool part is that you can upload your own fair memories to the collection. For example, you can share the story of your first kiss on the Ferris wheel or upload…

2 months away: Time to focus

Last week, I heard a great description of my job from a friend of mine. She was trying to explain to some out-of-state friends that in North Carolina, people stay excited about the State Fair all year long. According to her, our job is not about getting people excited about the fair; they already are. Instead, our job is about helping people focus on what they want to do this year at the fair. I really like that description. So, with just two months left between now and the start of the 2011 N.C. State Fair, it’s time to focus….

SPARK of Love

We love the fair around here, and if you follow this blog, you probably love the fair, too. Twitter roundup: Five fantastically fun fair games the entire family can enjoy

Not everyone likes biting into an ultra-sugary Twinkie log or hanging upside down and being thrown around on the Claw, so what else is there to do at the fair? The answer is simple: A LOT. There is a variety of live entertainment options, numerous premium competitions and an ever-changing array of exhibits on agriculture, industry and North Carolina history just to name a few. One other family friendly option is games. Games of chance trace their history back to the beginning of the fair itself. At that time, card games were the most prevelant, but fair officials banned that…

Twitter roundup: Ten terrifying rides you won’t want to miss at this year’s State Fair

The first ride debuted at the N.C. State Fair in 1891. It was called the Switchback Railway and is similar to what we think of today as a roller coaster. Since that time, the number of rides and the importance of the midway has increased as the fair has moved away from focusing solely on agriculture to promoting and celebrating North Carolina industry and culture more generally. The fair has a diverse offering of some pretty amazing rides, we posted some tweets on rides over the past week (#10terryifyingrides) to show people all the great adventures. Like we did last…

Recognition at the international convention

A handful of State Fair employees spent this past week in Las Vegas at the annual convention of the International Association of Fairs and Expos to learn more about organizing and operating our annual event.  It’s always a good chance for them to meet other fair organizers and share experiences and learn about new ways of doing things. In addition to several days of seminars and workshops, there’s also a trade show that features companies that offer the necessities of running a fair or festival, such as port-a-johns, livestock equipment and barriers, display cases, etc. This trade show also features…

Earlier this week, we asked for suggestions from our social media friends of things they would like to see covered on the Deep Fried blog. Thanks to everyone who sent us ideas. They were all creative – some were really creative – but ultimately we had to pick three. Congratulations to Cristy B, Debbie Quinn and Jessica! We’ll be sending you a family prize pack, which includes four free tickets to the Fair and other cool State Fair swag. Be sure to check the blog later this week as we post the fan-selected press office challenges, our own press office…

Announcing the 2010 Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup at the N.C. State Fair

We had so much fun getting to meet our tweeps in person during last year’s Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup at the N.C. State Fair that we decided to do it all again. This time, we’re moving the celebration to the very first day of the Fair to offer you a first glimpse at the rides, food and entertainment you can expect at the Fair. The Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup, co-hosted with OurHashtag, will be held on Preview Day, Thursday, Oct. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Folk Festival tent at the N.C. State Fair. We’re happy to announce that we’re also teaming up with TriOut…
