A salute to veterans

I have always respected the dedication of the men and women in our nation’s military. My father and three uncles served in the Army during World War II, and I now have the honor of working with many veterans at the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. I am extremely grateful for everything the members of our armed forces do to protect our country and the many freedoms we enjoy. I’ve said this many times, but I truly believe their work has made it possible for me to do the job I do today.

Veterans Day is a state holiday, and we should all take a few moments to reflect on the many sacrifices made by our service men and women. This year Veterans Day is even more meaningful, coming less than a week after the horrific shootings at Fort Hood, Texas. Let’s all take a minute to remember the families of those lost in the tragedy. But let’s also keep in our thoughts the many families of brave soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen serving around the world.

And if you know a veteran, take a minute — or several — to say thank you.
