Floriculture Month

May is Floriculture Month in North Carolina

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are an estimated 82.8 million mothers in the United States. Many of those mothers will receive flowers for Mother’s Day this Sunday, and there is a good chance their flowers were grown in North Carolina. The state ranks fifth in the nation in floriculture production with more than 20 million square feet of floral greenhouse area, nearly 800 acres of outdoor floral production and more than 1,000 different varieties grown.

In recognition of North Carolina’s floriculture industry, Gov. Bev Perdue recently proclaimed May as Floriculture Month. Overall, the industry contributes more than $207 million annually to the state’s economy.

If you still need a gift for Mother’s Day, you can find a listing of growers and more information about the N.C. floriculture industry at http://www.ncflowers.org/.
