There’s nothing quite like seeing the ingenuity it takes to modify a tractor for a tractor pull. Even if you’ve never seen a pull, you’ve probably heard the engines revving from the Rand Grandstand during the N.C. State Fair. Motorized tractor pulls have been going on across the country since 1929. But, according to the United Pullers of the Carolinas’ website, the events did not gain widespread interest in North Carolina until the 1970s. The N.C. State Fair soon became an important event on the regional circuit.

When the department planned the first Got to Be NC Festival in 2008, organizers made sure to include the popular sport in the entertainment lineup. The tractor pull will be back this year during the 2011 Got to Be NC Festival at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, May 20-22. The festival is a celebration of North Carolina food, farmers and agricultural products. Other planned activities include a food and wine expo, barbecue cook off, antique tractor and farm equipment display, fiber fest and classic car show.
