‘Week of Giving’ starts today at the State Farmers Market

Drop off your food and monetary donations under the giving tree in the Market Shoppes.

Throughout the year, State Farmers Market vendors donate about 1.5 million pounds of unwanted fresh produce to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. During the “Week of Giving” food drive, which runs through Saturday, market visitors can join in the effort and help local families in need this holiday season.

Last year, market visitors donated more than 1,200 pounds of food. Shoppers can drop off their non-perishable food items or monetary donations under the giving tree located in the Market Shoppes. After the food is collected, the food shuttle will distribute it to pantries and shelters in Wake and surrounding counties.

The week-long food drive will culminate with the Market Shoppes Open House Saturday, Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature holiday gifts for purchase, free samples from market vendors and prizes. Radio personalities Mike Raley and Anne Clapp also will be on-hand for a live broadcast of their “Weekend Gardener” show. The WPTF 680 AM hosts will offer free gardening advice to the crowd from 8 to 11 a.m.

While you’re at the State Farmers Market picking up a N.C. Christmas tree or items on your family’s shopping list, consider dropping off an extra item under the giving tree for another family who may not be so fortunate. To find out others ways to get involved, go to www.foodshuttle.org.
